Having trained and worked at the National Physical Laboratory she, with one assistant, established Butterworth Laboratories in 1974 as a privately funded and totally independent Company
For many years she was associated with the Microchemistry Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry, firstly as a Committee Member, then as Hon. Secretary and finally as Chairman. She was until recently a Committee Member of the R.S.C Downland section.
She was elected a Fellow of the Society in 1986, is a Chartered Scientist and is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors.
John Gearey FCA
Finance Director & Company Secretary
After more than 30 years in private practice prior to 2000, during which time Butterworths was a client of his accountancy firm, he joined the Company as a part time Director.
David Hawkins BSc CBiol MBiol MRQA
David started at Butterworth in 1990 as a Junior Analytical Chemist and has had various roles including Senior Microbiologist and Head of Quality Assurance and IT before becoming Chief Operating Officer in 2013 and Managing Director in 2017.
John Welch CChem FRSC MRQA
Associate Director of Business Operations
John started his career with Kodak Ltd at their Research Facilities in Wealdstone, Harrow, before moving into the pharmaceutical industry with Upjohn Ltd. He moved to Butterworth in 1987 as an Analytical Chemist and has had various roles including Laboratory Manager, QA Manager and has been responsible for the Scientific Business Management of the Company since 2000. He is an active member of the RSC and has spoken at both RSC and MHRA Seminars on subjects relating to contract analytical chemistry.
David Riches BSc CChem MRSC
Chief Scientific Officer
David started his career at Messers Sandberg Testing Laboratories which specialises in testing samples for the construction industry. He moved to Butterworth in 1986 as an Analytical Chemist specialising in Elemental Microanalysis. Prior to becoming Analytical Operations Manager in 2003, David had been the Senior Manager of Inorganic & General Chemistry since 1994.
David Bell BSc
Head of Projects
David started his career at Burmah Oil in 1974 and was the Chief Chemist, Laboratory Services Division of the Robertson Group plc from 1986 until he joined Butterworth in 1989 to head up the Chromatography laboratory. Having been Senior Manager of Chromatography & Elemental Microanalysis since 1992 David took on the role of Projects Manager in 2003.
